Traveling safely in winter

In the winter months, traveling can be more dangerous than in the clearer and warmer weather. Whether you’re driving somewhere new, flying to a different country or going by train, it’s important to travel safely in winter.

Be wary when driving - If it’s snowy or lashing cold rain, you need to be safe on the road. That means lowering the speed, ensuring all your windows are clear as they can be, and using lights when appropriate. It’s about being even more observant as usual because accidents are more likely to happen in dangerous conditions.

Dress appropriately - It goes without saying but in colder climates, dress warmly. The best thing to do is use the art of layering - that way if there are too many layers you can take some off, rather than not having enough clothing. Invest in thermal clothing, hats, and scarves; it’s all about keeping each area warm.

Be aware of delays - If traveling by public transport such as trains, buses, or even by plane, be wary of delays. On your way to each mode of transport, look up if there are any delays and relevant information. This way you’ll be prepared for the worst.

Be prepared - Before traveling in winter, you need to be prepared for every situation. That means checking over your car, packing food and drink, and generally ensuring you’re ready in case something happens.
