Many of us live lives of routine and commitment: Families, mortgages, 9-5 jobs, and anything else that may require a certain amount of commitment. We go about our day to day lives and often it feels like it’s enough, like we’re content. Yet sometimes that yearning for adventure gnaws away at us, that desire to break free and go explore undiscovered territories or climb mountains of monumental scale. Meanwhile, back in reality, there are bills to pay and commitments to keep. Not everyone can run off for a grand adventure, but for those who still yearn for it, microadventures may be a solution.
Microadventures is a term first popularised by British adventurer and author Alastair Humphreys. Broadly speaking, the term could encompass a number of different types of adventures of varying length and scope, but they generally tend to require far less commitment than say, a year abroad.
For those of us who can’t get away for that great escape, or who don’t have the budget for exciting expeditions, microadventures may be the solution. A short getaway to a nearby town may be enough to satisfy the need for adventure for a time, or perhaps even a local activity like skydiving or ziplining. A world of possibility awaits for every adventure seeker, and adventures don’t have to be big in order to be grand.
