The Lost City Of Z: A Big Gamble for Amazon

With the coming release of Disney+ and more streaming services to come, it’s becoming clear that consumers are about to find themselves in the middle of a streaming war. While each streaming service scrambles to obtain licensing rights, another factor may in fact determine who will emerge victorious: original content. Amazon Prime Video recently hit a few home runs with such smash hits as American Gods and The Boys, but in 2016 they took a big gamble with James Gray’s mythical adventure drama “The Lost City of Z.”

Based on the 2009 book of the same name by David Grann, The Lost City of Z tells the story of British explorer Percy Fawcett, who was sent to Brazil in an attempt to discover a supposed ancient lost city in the Amazon. The film stars Charlie Hunnam as Fawcett, Robert Pattinson as fellow explorer Henry Costin, Sienna Miller as his wife, Nina Fawcett; and Tom Holland as his son Jack Fawcett.

Unfortunately for Amazon, who partnered up with Bleecker Street for the film’s distribution, The Lost City of Z didn’t quite live up to expectations. With a budget of $30 million, the film didn’t even manage to crack $20 million at the worldwide box office, earning just $8 million in the US. Although it’s earnings were impressive for an independent film, it’s hard to call The Lost City of Z a win for Amazon.
